Smartcat Improves
Its User Experience
and Grows Globally
With Optimational

About

With sustained growth since 2016, Smartcat seeks to revolutionise the translation industry, with its all-in-one platform, connecting professional linguists and businesses, and propelling the language industry to the peak of its technological potential.

Its translation tool, chosen by many global market leaders and industry benchmarks, provides the precise bridge to reach new destinations.

“Offering Smartcat in Spanish has positively influenced our existing and new customers from Spanish-speaking countries because we have removed the language-barrier obstacle for those who weren’t able to use the tool before localisation. That’s the very least we can do to help our users grow.”

The Challenge

Among the reasons thousands of professionals choose Smartcat are: Its multiple integrations that facilitate localisation and the execution of multilingual strategies, the infinite number of supported translation formats, the ease of use, and much more.

That said, it is clear how crucial user experience is to the company. For Smartcat, people are the key value: People who use the platform and people who build the platform. And sometimes these groups overlap. With that in mind, creating a great product in multiple languages is a solution that aligns with their beliefs.

And Spanish takes a special place since it is in the top 10 of Smartcat’s audience’s languages. So, their next choice of language for localisation was obvious.

The Solution

To better support its Spanish-speaking customers, Smartcat wanted to translate its tool and website. And to do so, they relied on the Optimational team of experts, who helped them to quickly prepare for localisation, so there were no delays in taking the entire project from idea to implementation.

By using a translation API integration that automatised the entire process, Optimational made it happen. In turn, the translation of the Smartcat tool and website helped to promote brand awareness, as well as enhance the overall experience to bring more value to the platform’s users in Spanish-speaking countries.

The Step-by-Step Process

The Optimational team designed a specific workflow for the project, which included the following steps:

.1

RESEARCH

The translation of an online CAT tool to reflect its intended use required linguistic research into the genre and the target market culture to make risk-informed decisions and leverage internationalisation efforts.

.2

MACHINE TRANSLATION

The MT engine available on the Smartcat platform was used to speed up the first step of the process and harness the accessible technological resources.

.3

STYLE GUIDE AND GLOSSARY CREATION

A Spanish style guide and a translation glossary were created. This simplified the linguists’ work and ensured that the texts remained coherent throughout the platform and website.

.4

TRANSLATION AND LOCALISATION

A professional translator from Spain reviewed the MT output to ensure adequacy, consistency, readability, etc. In addition, the linguist localised all content that could be regionally adapted.

.5

EDITING

During this stage, another linguist revised the content to fine-tune extra details and edit, if necessary. In other words, post-editing and localisation were reviewed for greater clarity and usage experience.

.6

QUALITY CHECK

In the proofreading stage, a third professional linguist performed the final proofreading and quality assessment of the outcome. This ensured the delivery of the best possible result and concluded an efficient end-to-end process.

The Results

The growing use of the locale is the best indicator of good localisation. And today, Spanish is its second most popular language:

0 %

of current customers prefer to use Smartcat in Spanish

As for the website, since the Spanish launch, traffic from Spanish-speaking countries has grown by 20%.

It is also worth mentioning that since the launch of the Spanish UI, the number of users on the platform and the number of them leaving an NPS score of 8 or higher (that is, the likelihood that they recommend Smartcat) grew by 60%.

“The experience of working with caring people and creating opportunities for others is the best result we can possibly have.”
